Word of the deal had been circulating here since April. Prior to the latest purchase of 61 million shares, Toyota owned 9.5 percent of Fuji, with which it is jointly developing a new sub-$20,000 sports car. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-seater is due in 2011 and is expected to use a high-performance 2.0-liter flat-4 engine developed by Subaru. The partners also collaborate on vehicle development and assembly. Subaru assembles the Camry at its Indiana plant, and Daihatsu is planning to supply minicars to Subaru in Japan later this year. |
