BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe to Debut at Detroit
In the lead up to next month’s Detroit Auto Show BMW has taken the wraps off its latest model, the all-new X6 ‘Sports Activity Coupe’. As expected the production version remains virtually identical to the concept unveiled back at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, keeping the five-door, four-seat, coupe-like body, and tall ride-height. The big news is the introduction of a new direct-injection and twin-turbo V8 petrol engine.
The 4.4L force-fed engine produces 400hp (298kW) and 609Nm (450lb-ft) of torque. Though output doesn’t seem that high for a twin-turbo V8 engine, the forced induction ensures peak torque is spread over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,800-4,500rpm. Equipped with the twin-turbo V8, the X6 accelerates from 0-60mph in just 5.3 seconds and will reach an electronically controlled top speed of 155mph. Also available is the proven 3.0L twin-turbo inline six with the same 300hp (224kW) and 406Nm (300lb-ft) of torque as the 335i coupe. All BMW X6 models feature xDrive AWD with electronic control for variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear axles as standard. The X6 also debuts ‘Dynamic Performance Control’ (DPC), which ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels.
