Volkswagen Taking Majority Stake in Proton — and Lotus
Volkswagen has agreed to purchase a majority 51 percent stake in ailing Malaysian carmaker Proton. The as-yet-unconfirmed deal would provide Volkswagen with control of British-based sports-car maker Lotus, a Proton property.
Volkswagen has long courted a relationship with Proton and even committed to building cars in the Malaysian carmaker's underutilized manufacturing plants in 2005. However, that plan failed to reach fruition.
